Y Cylch Sialc

The Caucasian Chalk Circle

Original music composed and performed live by Gwenno

Welsh translation by Mererid Hopwood

“Y Cylch Sialc is remarkable and credit must be lavished on director Sarah Bickerton...It has a wicked, bawdy, dark humour that commands the attention even for those who, like me, might not be mother tongue Welsh. This exuberant, lively and amusing production is an ensemble of the very highest standard.”

Tracey Ress Cooke, Wales Arts Review

‘affecting and energetic Brechtian staging’

Nicholas Davies, The Stage

“Sarah Bickerton’s production was energetic and inventive and made excellent use of the theatre space”

Angharad Price, Barn

Theatr Cymru (Welsh Language National Theatre of Wales) production in association with Theatrau Sir Gar

Revolution is in the air and a city burns. A baby is abandoned in the chaos.

A young woman risks everything to save the child. With the country torn apart by war and soldiers hot on their heels, she resolves to protect him at all costs. But in a corrupt world, is love enough?

For the first time, Theatr Genedlaethol Cymru takes on Bertolt Brecht in a new Welsh-language adaptation by Mererid Hopwood with original music performed live by Gwenno. Boldly staged, this twentieth-century classic bursts with music, dark humour and larger-than-life characters; an epic story of doing the right thing when the world goes wrong.
